Scope and Contents

This collection comprises photo albums documenting the West Coast Women’s Music Festivals and Michigan Womyn’s Music Festivals from 1981-1990. The photo albums contain annotated photographs by Cheryl Nassar and Karen Krog and documents and ephemera from the festivals. The collection also includes photographs and ephemera from events such as Orange County Cultural Pride, Long Beach Pride, and National Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) Marches. A selection of books, periodicals, and songbooks collected by Cheryl are also included in the collection.

Property rights to the physical objects belong to the June L. Mazer Lesbian Archives. All other rights, including copyright, are retained by the creators and their heirs. It is the responsibility of the researcher to determine who holds the copyright and pursue the copyright owner or heir for permission to publish where the June L. Mazer Lesbian Archives do not hold the copyright.

Biographical / Historical

“Cheryl Nassar (July 10, 1944 - January 9, 2012) was born and grew up in Pennsylvania. She received a Bachelor's Degree in English Literature from the University of Pittsburgh. Throughout the 1980s, she was extremely active in women's rights as well as gay and lesbian rights organizations in Pittsburgh, PA, Cincinnati, OH, and in Southern California. She was the official photographer for many of the gay pride events throughout Southern California.”

Abstract

Cheryl Nassar was a photographer and active member of the lesbian activist community in Southern California. The majority of the collection comprises photo albums documenting the West Coast Women’s Music Festivals, Michigan Womyn’s Music Festivals, and other lesbian and feminist events.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The collection was donated by Cheryl Nassar’s wife Ingrid P. Wicken in 2014

Processing Information

Photo albums have been transferred to archival boxes and some protective sleeves have been replaced. Festival programs included in the original photo albums have been stored in a separate folder. Several books originally donated with the collection have been deaccessioned per the Mazer’s collection policy.
